Save energy, equipment life and money

Abrupt starts and stops cause unnecessary wear and tear on pumping equipment. The full in-rush current also puts the equipment at risk for burn out. The significant cost of premature equipment failure can be averted by using technology that softens both the starts and stops.

The two most popular technologies are Across-the-Line Starters and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). Both can effectively protect pumping equipment on startup and shutdown, although they use different methods to achieve the outcome.

This paper reviews these technologies, their advantages and tradeoffs in a typical oil field application. This paper will explore many of the relevant issues, including:

  • Start and Stop Strain
  • Controlling Start and Stop
  • Controlling Pump Off
  • Advantages and Tradeoffs
